The Art Pilgrimage
Art aficionados know Marfa. They all know about this holy place of art way down by the Mexican border. A place where one Donald wants to build a wall and another Donald made art. In this far flung Texan corner, Donald Judd created a pilgrimage for serious followers of art.
Just getting there is a challenge and since Judd found Marfa, new challenges have sprung. The Homeland Border control sits some miles from the Mexican border but it’s right on the route to the Judd Foundation Properties. We too were stopped, grilled and threatened, read our rights (in the name of the Patriot Act) the removal of them.
Zapped with an adrenaline rush we arrived to be treated, thrilled and over-awed. Not only is Judd’s work momental, those following in his footsteps like Dan Flavin do not disappoint. Marfa is an art exhibition in progress...new artists continually add new works. Was it worth the effort? Indeed yes. Now we too can add our bit to the New York cocktail chatter. Yes we have been and seen Judd (and Flavin et al).
